We had a huge hailstorm in early summer one year, here. It was a really warm day, and had been raining a bit, and suddenly there was a TERRIFIC clattering noise, like the house was being attacked by people with machine guns. I poked my head out the door after it stopped and there were golfball-sized hailstones all over the squashed garden. It was AMAZING.
It was the first and only time I ever saw hail in Japan, in nearly 15 years.
It doesn't seem to matter what season it is, for hail.
