Dark Monster

I'm entering my room at night. It's dark. It's late. I leave the lights off until I reach my bed, where I turn on the lamp on my nightstand. I turn towards the bed and stop. I stare, in horror, at what I see.

In the middle of my bed, glaring at me, like something evil, dressed in black - threatening me with eternal damnation.... is a Bible.

My Bible. Do I have a Bible?? (I have a Bible...)

I've got to stop reading books referencing the Bible; I never can resist the temptation to look up the passage and go "Ha ha - it doesn't even say that! Suck at that, sucker!!"

Freaks me out every time I see the damn thing though, never can figure out what the hell a Bible is doing on my bed... (I have a feeling it doesn't want to be in that particular spot any more than I want it there...)

Maybe I should get a Quran, I wonder if that would be equally freaky...

Along came global warming...

November 7th 1993
Lumberton, North Carolina

[...] a small A-frame cottage sitting right on the water, surrounded by fir and birch trees. The weather was near perfect. Indian summer, later than it ever ought to come. Global warming marches on.
James Patterson, Along Came a Spider

If global warming was a fact 16 years ago, why has it taken people and politicians so long to react? If it was already something everybody knew had been going on for a while, something casually mentioned in a novel like that, how come nobody seemed to care?

Grapes of Wrath, part II

'If Ma was anywheres about, that gate'd be shut an' hooked. That's one thing she always done - seen that gate was shut.' His eyes were warm. 'Ever since the pig got in over to Jacobs' an' et the baby. Milly Jacobs was jus' out in the barn. She come in while the pig was still eatin' it. Well, Milly Jacobs was in a family way, an' she went ravin'. Never did get over it. Touched ever since.'

Grapes of Wrath, part I

"Here's me preachin' grace. An' here's them people gettin' grace so hard they're jumpin' an' shoutin'. Now they say layin' up with a girl comes from the devil. But the more grace a girl got in her, the quicker she wants to go out in the grass." An' I got to thinkin' how in the hell, s'cuse me, how can the devil get in when a girl is so full of the Holy Sperit that it's spoutin' out of her nose an' ears.

Je peux pas dormir...

Last night I realized some books are good to read when you're in bed and about to go to sleep. "The Sexual Life of Catherine M" is not one of them.

I put the book down but kept tossing and turning and couldn't sleep until past 6am. I was supposed to get up at 7 which didn't happen.

I hope to sleep a little more than two hours tonight. As long as I can stay away from that book... I get all kinds of pictures and ideas in my head...

The Sheep Book

"We finished our packing and had intercourse, then went out and saw a movie. In the movie there were a lot of men and women having intercourse too. Nothing wrong with watching others having intercourse, after all."

Haruki Murakami in the book A Wild Sheep Chase

Men and Monsters

Also from the book I'm reading.

The woman telling the story is a make up artist working for a TV station, currently on a science fiction show where she has to make the actors look like aliens, 'monsters' if you like.

"Hector took me aside today. He said he was sorry about Terry. I said, all I ever wanted to do was understand the man inside the monster. He said 'No love, you've got it the wrong way round.' He said women always do."

I think they might be invisible.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

I just finished watching Breakfast at Tiffany's. It was nice but I wish they'd kept the ending from the book... I think they've changed it, haven't they? Apart from Holly herself, the ending was the best part of the whole book... They must have changed it. Didn't feel the same.

I wonder who that Paul guy is... Of course, if I really wanted to, I could find his name in five seconds but I don't want to know his name. He just seemed nice... Blonde hair, blue eyes... he didn't smile a whole lot, come to think of it... And he wasn't a rat. Or a super rat. Just a pussycat, really. Like Cat.
